Difference between tetracaine and lidocaine

Both tetracaine and lidocaine have anesthetic functions, but the two are not exactly the same, and you need to pay special attention when choosing a drug, and below I will introduce you to the difference between the two. The differences between the two mainly include the following:

1. Structure: Tetracaine belongs to ester local anesthetic, while lidocaine belongs to amide local anesthetic;

2. Uses: Tetracaine is mainly used for anesthesia of nasal, oral cavity, eye and other mucosa, while lidocaine is mainly blocked by local anesthesia injection, or nerve block anesthesia, regional block anesthesia, neuraxial anesthesia, such as epidural anesthesia.

Both tetracaine and lidocaine produce local anesthetic effects, and absorption through the mucosa with tetracaine may produce toxic effects and require close observation.

3. Tetracaine is a long-acting anesthetic preparation, and in general, the delayed effect is better than lidocaine. Lidocaine and tetracaine are two clinically commonly used local anesthetic drugs, of which tetracaine is an esterified long-acting local anesthetic drug, which has a faster onset time and a longer maintenance time than lidocaine. However, the dose of tetracaine used is relatively large and prone to toxic reactions, so when using tetracaine, you must pay attention to some of the toxic reactions it may induce.

In short, lidocaine is shorter than tetracaine in terms of its action and duration.

When people administer drugs to broken or inflamed skin, blood levels may increase.

Eye contact with this product should be avoided, and if the eyes come into contact with this product, immediately rinse with plenty of water or normal saline to protect the eyes until the sensation is restored.

4. Tetracaine is an ester local anesthetic, a long-acting local anesthetic, its penetrating power is strong, mainly used for mucosal surface anesthesia in stomatology, otolaryngology, ophthalmology and other operations, because of its greater toxicity, generally not used for local infiltration anesthesia.

Lidocaine belongs to amide local anesthetic, is an intermediate local anesthetic, anesthesia time of 60-90 minutes, fast onset, wide diffusion, no obvious vasodilation effect, toxicity increases with the increase of drug concentration.

Clinically, it is mainly used for local anesthesia, conduction block anesthesia, epidural anesthesia and antiarrhythmic effects.
